Assignment: Utrecht is looking for a redevelopment of the Smakkelaarsveld. The proposed building will have a mixed use of 30.000m2 with a market. Utrecht wants the building to contribute in the goal of sustainable urban living and wants it to be an urban meeting place.

The site: Smakkelaarsveld is located next to Utrecht Central Station and is part of the city corridor that connects the west with the historic center. It is located in front of the new bike storage. Although the city fabric around Central Station is fragmented you can see it is part of building block along side the Catherijnesingel.

Smakkelaarsveld has a good connection the the A2 highway. The new building on the Smakkelaarsveld will occupy the norther part of the plot leaving a rectangular square along the proposed city corridor. By placing the building in this position, the fragmented and undefined plot will be repaired. In fact the whole central station area will benefit from the clarity that this building and square will give.
