Proposal for a residential block on a 40×40 square meter plot in De Pijp, Amsterdam. The typology in this area is an unit of repetition, with residential blocks of 4 levels divided into: base – middle – top, approximately 40 meters deep with back-to-back housing rows. The street profile is very narrow, and due to the east-west orientation, there is limited sunlight on the streets.
The proposal rotates the two rows of houses by 90 degrees. This creates a street in the middle, which also functions as a square. On either side, a block is created with 4 levels, 40 meters long, and 11 meters deep. One block accommodates students, and the other houses seniors. In the center, a tower is added to connect the two blocks and facilitate the elevators.
The two blocks provide housing for 4 starters (on the ground floor of the student block), 36 students, and 18 seniors. On the ground floor of the senior block, there are commercial spaces, a gym for both seniors and the neighborhood, and a work/study area.
